Laut diesem Beitrag hat seine Stimme einen Umfang von 3 1/2 Oktaven und ist gleichzeitig ein unglaublich begabter Musiker auf zahlreichen Instrumenten. Er nimmt in monatelanger Kleinarbeit jeden Track selber auf und setzt den Song dann zusammen. Er studiert am Royal College of Music Jazz Piano. Seine Mutter ist dort Professorin für Geige.

Jacob Collier is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and youtube sensation. He’s primarily known for a series of music videos that he posts online, in which he creates ingenious arrangements of songs by composers ranging from Jerome Kern to Stevie Wonder.

In the videos, he records himself singing elaborate and ingenious harmonies, and films himself singing each of the parts, dressed in a slightly different shirt and hairstyle. There’s something very sweet and almost naïve about the visual presentation – it’s definitely homegrown and handmade, but the music is so sophisticated, so hip, so smart and at the same time, so beautiful, that the combination of the visual presentation and the music delivers a massive punch.

Our conversation feels like a document of a brilliant artist, still early in his development. At only 20 years old, he’s already beyond most musical minds I’ve come across. But he’s also still totally curious, filled with an enormous amount of wonder and enthusiasm for new ideas, musical or otherwise.

Here he talks about his personal approach to learning, music and harmony, what makes a groove work, the role of technology for him and his generation, and handling early cyber-fame.

In 1985 after "Live Aid," Belafonte felt that the Americans should be doing something to help combat the famine in Ethiopia. Harry then called up Ken Kragen and Lionel Richie who thought of me as a producer probably because I had just done the song "State of Independence" for Donna Summer which had about one-third of the "We Are the World" choir on it. I suggested that Lionel write the song with Michael. The day of the recording we did the backgrounds first, then I had to tell that crowd who would get solos and who wouldn't. Only 21 out of 46 got to take a solo. That ain't easy man. But I think the result was unforgettable, and in some ways, it was a miracle.
So, today, one of our newest artists, Jacob Collier, did a short tribute to the song in my studio. Happy 30th Birthday ‪#‎WeAreTheWorld‬!

Friends, yo. Finally able to share some very exciting news!!!

I am opening for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea on the main stage at the Montreux Jazz Festival this summer, July 16th.
Right now I'm at MIT in Boston, building a mighty machine capable of looping, harmonising, grooving, and on-screen-displaying me all at once, in a solo performance format that has never before been seen or heard (on Earth), enabling music creation directly from the mind of Jacob.

This gig will be the debut show.

"Collier’s YouTube videos are brilliant yet bewildering as multiple incarnations of himself simultaneously create 14-part vocal harmonies and play a daunting number of instruments – clearly this was always going to be a challenge to reproduce live on stage. Yet thanks to his connection with Jones, Collier’s all-encompassing vision has been brought to life by a kindred-spirit in the world of advanced music tech, in the form of Ben Bloomberg of MIT in Massachusetts. He’s created a highly sensitive vocal harmonisation unit and found a way to seamlessly blend real-time performance with sophisticated backing tracks – while enabling Collier to loop various percussion, bass and keyboard parts on-the-fly without any awkward computer glitches. Adding in the video elements to all this was the ace in Collier’s pack, with a live image of himself projected onto a screen at the back of the stage. This was taken to another dimension when he began playing vocalised chords, each key produced its own Jacob face – momentarily creating a virtual choir that perfectly matched his oohs and ahs. If that was clever then more was to come as he began bouncing Tigger-like from one instrument to the next, on opener ‘Don’t You Worry Bout A Thing’, the smart video technology capturing each successive sample, then, like the music, looped the video in place. The result being a small group of Jacobs playing like a virtual band on the screen behind – and all credit to Will Young and Louis Mustill from Artists and Engineers, who created the technology to do this."

Sorry, dass ich dir jetzt widersprechen muss, da ist absolut nichts Gekünzeltes, die Harmonien sind einfach grandios, modern.
Eher ist das Ganze für die heimliche englische Nationalhymne fast schon zu zurückhaltend geworden. Es hat absolut nichts martialisches.
Ich würde mir sogar eine viel längere extended Version wünschen, genau wie ein Kommentator auf youtube. Viel mehr den Kontrapunkt von gregorianischem Gesang und Jazz/Soul Harmonien.

@esiststeffen hast du überhaupt schon mal das Original in vollem Zuckerguss gehört, mit Orgel, großem Chor, Orchester, also jetzt nicht die Grölsauffassung in den Stadien oder bei der Hochzeit von Willkam und Kate.

Und zuletzt, um die absolute Göttinenlästerung zu begehen. Lena sollte Gesangsunterricht bei ihm nehmen und ihre Produzenten bei ihm lernen, wie moderne Musik klingt und nicht billig und GEKÜNZELT

Lange Jahre hat es gedauert, bis der Veranstalter der jazzopen die Musiklegende Quincy Jones nach Stuttgart locken konnte. Nun ist es soweit: der Meister gibt sich die Ehre! Seine Freunde und Weggefährten Benson, Bridgewater und Collier werden den von Jones produzierten Abend gestalten und bereichern.

Die Klangkörper zu diesem außergewöhnlichen Konzertabend stammen aus Stuttgart: die SWR Big Band und das Kammerorchester Stuttgart werden sich für zweieinhalb Stunden unter der Leitung des Londoner Dirigenten und Arrangeurs Jules Buckley zu einem Orchester vereinen.

"Der US-Amerikanische Musikproduzent, Komponist und Jazztrompeter gehört zu den weltweit renommiertesten Künstlern und einflussreichsten Produzenten des Jazz und Pop und wurde breiten Kreisen als Produzent von Michael Jackson und Frank Sinatra bekannt. "This is part two of my after hours hang at the Blue Note, NYC. In actuality, it's part one and you're about to learn why. After giving up on my interview with Jacob and leaving the club, I decided I needed one more shot and went back in, resigned to try and ask for a duet. I had been worried he would be too tired, but as I re-entered the club, I saw him walking with his friend, Mathis to the piano. I followed close behind and when they lifted the lid of the Steinway, I said, "Jacob, you mind if I record?" He knew that I had wanted to get something for my YouTube channel because of a previous email exchange we had had and he replied, "Of course!" I pressed record. I had no idea that the two of them would play for nearly an hour. They would not have stopped if Jacob's road crew didn't tell him he needed to quit. I think these two could have played all night. They stopped 4 minutes shy of an hour and I asked to finish off the 60 minutes. Thanks again to both of you for allowing me to be part of this epic moment."

Ich hab Jacob Collier heute live in Kassel gesehen. Ich war sehr begeistert. Er stand allein auf der Bühne und hat alle Instrumente (mind. 8) selbst gespielt. Alles war mit einem Looper verbunden. Es gab musikalisch allerhöchste Kunst, z. B. Jazzimprovisatioen von Klassikern wie Blackbird (The Beatles), Fascinating Rhythm (George Gershwin), In my Room (The Beach Boys) oder Don't you worry 'bout a thing (Stevie Wonder), aber auch schöne Eigenkompositionen wie Hideaway oder Saviour. Letzteres hat er zusammen mit dem Publikum performed. Auch sehr beeindruckend war seine Videokunst. Er hat sich mit während des Konzerts mit zwei X-Box Kameras filmen lassen und das dann auf die Leinwand projiziert. Das gab dann den schönen Effekt, dass er praktisch als ein Ein-Mann-Band gleichzeitig an mehreren Instrumenten zu sehen war. Sowohl am Piano als auch stimmlich ist der Mann (22 Jahre) ein Wunderkind. Was er beispielsweise bei Don't you worry 'bout a thing an Scatgesang performed hat, war der absolute Hammer. Mir hat das Konzert richtig gut gefallen und er kann gerne wiederkommen.
